Position Description:
Hiring two full-time Research Interns to support research and Cooperative Extension projects in the UC Rangelands lab during summer 2018. Projects will focus on evaluating rangeland water quality, investigating mountain meadow responses to grazing management strategies, and outreach activities related to field studies. Interns will help complete field and lab work and will gain experience collaborating with various rangeland resource stakeholders, including livestock producers, UC Cooperative Extension advisors and specialists, and US Forest Service staff. Interns will be based in Davis, CA, but frequent overnight travel to field sites across northern California will be required. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, but the schedule may vary week to week.
Typical duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Field work, including driving and hiking and collecting samples and data in remote areas
- Laboratory work, including processing water samples to determine bacteria concentrations, preparing growth media, cleaning and maintaining field and lab equipment
- Enter collected and processed data in databases and perform quality control checks of all data collected
- Communicate regularly and professionally with project partners
Minimum Qualifications:
- UC Davis student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, environmental sciences, natural resources, biological sciences, hydrology or a related field of study
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- Physical capability and endurance to safely and efficiently conduct field work
- Ability and willingness to travel and camp for up to a week at a time and hike moderately rugged terrain
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to accurately collect, record, and report data
- Strong organizational skills and proficiency using common computer software programs (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing, databases, email)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency navigating with maps and handheld GPS
